School-based CPR training

School-based CPR training teaches the skills needed to intervene effectively with an adult, child or infant victim (depending on the training) in cardiopulmonary arrest and/or with an obstructed airway. This training also teaches the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).

The training is designed to meet the requirements of the Ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement Supérieur concerning the general education of students. To do so, physical and health educators must be licensed as School CPR Teachers by the Lifesaving Society.

The three trainings in the School CPR program are:

  • School-based CPR
  • School-based CPR Teacher
  • CPR Trainer—Physical and Health Educator

IMPORTANT

  • Simply completing a course does not mean that a candidate will automatically pass.
  • Teachers and trainers are responsible for creating training schedules. These should include the location of the training, dates, scheduled breaks, and be tailored to the needs of the teachers and locations.

CPR LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the training, candidates will be able to:

  • Use an AED
  • Explain the legal framework as it relates to first aid
  • Respond to potential resuscitation complications
  • Recognize controllable and uncontrollable risk factors
  • Perform a primary examination on an unconscious victim without complications
  • Demonstrate how to communicate with emergency medical services (EMS)
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and airway management

ISSUING LICENCES

Following the training, in order to issue licences, it is required to provide the following information by email to alerte@sauvetage.qc.ca:

  • the name of the school
  • the date of the training (day/month/year)
  • the name of the School-based CPR Teacher
  • the names and group a number of the students who successfully completed the training.

Certificates will be mailed directly to the school or to the School-based CPR Teacher, as desired. Licences are $2.00 per student, and the school will be billed.

SCHOOL CPR TRAINING

The CPR training in the school environment lasts 3 hours and can be divided into several lessons throughout the school year. The target audience is third-year secondary students, but it is possible to offer the training to students from other grade levels. There are no prerequisites to take the CPR training in the school environment.

The training must take place in a school or extracurricular setting. The person who teaches and evaluates the CPR training in the school environment is a School CPR Instructor. This person is not required to inform the Lifesaving Society of the date or time of the training.

SCHOOL-BASED CPR TEACHER TRAINING

The School CPR Instructor training lasts 7 hours. The target audience is physical education and health teachers or students studying to become physical education and health teachers. To take this training, the teacher must have previously obtained a teaching certification issued by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education or be in the process of obtaining this certification. The person who teaches and evaluates the School CPR Instructor training is a Physical Education and Health CPR Trainer.

To renew your School CPR Instructor certification, you must complete a CPR-C training to keep your knowledge up to date and continue teaching CPR courses in schools.

Here are the options available to you:

  1. You can register for an independent course.
  2. If all the teachers in the same school service wish to renew their certification at the same time, you can request the Lifesaving Society to organize a session at your school.

Once the training is completed, we invite you to fill out the renewal form for your School CPR Instructor certification.

After paying the renewal fee ($30), your certification will be renewed.

CPR TRAINER—PHYSICAL AND HEALTH EDUCATOR

The minimum requirements to be considered a Physical Education and Health CPR Trainer are holding a teaching certification from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and having the School CPR Instructor certification. Additionally, a teacher must have taught a minimum of 2 School CPR courses.
