RECERTIFICATION
WHAT IS A REQUALIFICATION FOR INSTRUCTORS?
A requalification is an assessment during which the knowledge, skills, and physical fitness of a certificate holder are evaluated. It ensures that the holder is still able to perform their duties correctly without having to complete full training again. Participants must therefore prepare accordingly.
According to the Regulation on Public Pool Safety, certain certifications are only recognized as valid work permits if they are requalified after a certain period of time.
The credit system does not allow for the requalification of level 1 certifications. Therefore, to stay up-to-date, the following certifications must be requalified:
- Lifeguard Instructor
- First Aid Instructor
- Swim Instructor
RECERTIFICATION LIFEGUARD INSTRUCTOR, FIRST AID INSTRUCTOR, AND SWIM INSTRUCTOR
To make the process more efficient and less time-consuming, we have introduced new maintenance and skills development activities for instructors who wish to stay up-to-date.
This program will be launched during the annual forum in September 2025.
New Features of the 2026-2027 Recertification Program:
Combined Recertification: You will now be able to recertify two certifications by taking a single recertification session, optimizing your time and efforts. To access this option, refer to the table below.
Training Duration: Recertification will be limited to a maximum of 8 hours in-person, spread over a two-year period. Therefore, if you have 3 level 1 certifications to recertify, you will need to complete at least 2 recertifications.
A member of the Lifesaving Society who holds both Swim Instructor and Lifeguard Instructor certificates, who teaches and evaluates 2 lifeguard courses during the two years preceding their recertification, will only need to complete the swim instructor recertification, which lasts 4 hours.
A swim and lifeguard instructor who wishes to recertify and has not taught and evaluated two bronze levels or taught 60 hours of swimming lessons in the year preceding their recertification will need to participate in both recertification activities: one for the swim instructor (4 hours) and one for the lifeguard instructor (4 hours).
Concrete Examples:
Guilaine: Holds MPS + MS + MN. She can register for a recertification on Friday evening (MPS) and Sunday morning (choice between MS and MN). She will then need to submit a request via the credit system for her third certification. See the table for the prerequisites required to access the level 1 credit system.
Anne-Marie: Holds MS + MN. She can choose a recertification based on her activities over the last two years and can submit a request via the credit system for her second certification.
Cynthia: Holds MS + MPS. She can choose a recertification based on her activities over the last two years and can submit a request via the credit system for her second certification.
Sandrine: Holds only one instructor certification. She will need to complete an in-person recertification and will not have access to the credit system.
Véronique: Holds MS and MN. Unfortunately, she is not active (she has not taught any bronze courses or swimming lessons). She will need to complete both recertifications to update her certifications.
If an instructor has not been active in the past two years (according to the table above), they will need to complete all recertifications and will not have access to the credit system.
In any case, the instructor may choose to participate in all recertification sessions.
