Abuse - Harassment - Neglect - Violence

In order to take a clear stance against violence and assume its responsibilities, the Lifesaving Society has adhered to the Ministerial Statement on the Protection of Integrity in Sport and Recreation, and is committed to implementing :

  • An integrity protection policy, including an independent complaint management mechanism for situations of abuse, harassment, neglect or violence;
  • A policy of criminal record checks (screening) that will apply to all directors, staff and those who, like volunteers, act on their behalf, both in their interpersonal relations and with members;
  • Awareness-raising, information and training measures concerning the protection of integrity.

With reference to the Ministerial Statement on the Protection of Integrity in Sport and Recreation, the objectives are :

  • Ensure a safe environment for everyone involved in sports
  • Ensure complete objectivity in handling complaints
  • Ensure uniformity across all sports with centralized processing
  • Guarantee funding for the program to ensure its effectiveness and sustainability.

In a sports or leisure context, violence can be perpetrated by a person in authority (e.g., a coach), peers (teammates, opponents), parents, employees, administrators, managers, team representatives, spectators, a member of the medical or support team (physical trainer, massage therapist, etc.). It can occur in locker rooms or showers, at the pool or during training, at a trainer's home, or during competitions, introductory sports courses or away trips. The concepts set out in this policy apply to all participants in sport and recreation, including vulnerable clienteles such as participants with a physical or intellectual disability, and all athletes from initiation to those committed to excellence.

Here is some important reference information:

An independent officer has been appointed to handle complaints of abuse, harassment, neglect or violence of a sexual or other nature. Any person involved in the (federated) environment must report to the Complaints Officer any type of violence committed against a person who is also involved in the (federated) environment, whether that person is a minor or an adult.
