DECEMBER 2020 - EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP

IT IS POSSIBLE TO TEACH A LIFESAVING COURSE, EVEN IN RED ZONE AREAS!

Regarding training courses in red zone areas, considering the Ministerial Order of June 6 advocating for the maintenance of training activities leading to the National Lifeguard – Pool Certification, the Lifesaving Society confirms to its affiliated members that: .

  • Pools changing rooms can remain open with control of all entries and exits and limitation of the number of people present at the same time.
  • Training courses leading to a National Lifeguard Certification can be maintained. However, if some theoretical courses can be taught online or remotely, this should be prioritized.

In all cases, the 2-meter distancing rule should be respected and wearing a face cover is mandatory both in the changing rooms and for the theoretical aspect of the training. For the practical part of the training, please refer to the COVID-19 Special Feature section in the SUMMER 2020 edition of our Alerte Magazine and to the Fiche sauveteur national – piscine en contexte de covid-19 for information on how to wear personal protective equipment in aquatic settings.

We invite you to take advantage of the fact that only lifesaving courses leading to the National Lifeguard Certificate are authorized to start scheduling for the winter, if it has not been done yet, Bronze Medallion and Cross, General First Aid and National Lifeguard courses. Visit the Special Section: Dossier COVID-19 of your Dashboard to consult different guides that will help you program several courses leading to the National Lifeguard Certificate in the context of COVID-19.

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NEW BRONZE MEDAL AWARDS PROGRAM: DO YOU HAVE YOUR GUIDE?

As we have announced several times in the last few months, the Lifesaving Society has updated its Bronze Medal Awards, in order to:

  • Reflect the Society’s current research into drowning in Canada including the incidence and consequences of non-fatal drowning.
  • Focus on the core areas of competency in water rescue: skills, knowledge, fitness and judgment.
  • Improve skill progressions for a logical and seamless flow into National Lifeguard and to set candidates up for success as they move through the Society’s lifesaving, assistant lifeguard, and lifeguard continuum (Swim patrol, Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross).

Get ready to teach the new Bronze Medal Awards Program in January! To order the new Guide, or any other Lifesaving Society products, complete the Instructor Order Form.

Also check out Lesson Plans, Test Sheets and Evaluation Grids available on your Dashboard on the Lifesaving Society website.
