With the arrival of warmer weather, the desire to enjoy swimming naturally returns. Between purchasing the products needed to maintain a pool and creating an inviting outdoor living space, it can be easy to focus primarily on comfort and appearance.
However, the safety and compliance of pool installations should never be overlooked. Too often, the excitement of creating a backyard worthy of a magazine feature overshadows the essential measures needed to prevent accidents. Is Your Pool Inaccessible at All Times?
It only takes a few seconds for an unsupervised child to gain access to a swimming pool. Preventing access to the pool when it is not in use is therefore one of the most important measures for preventing drowning, particularly among young children.
Since July 1, 2021, several amendments have been made to the Residential Swimming Pool Safety Regulation to improve safety around residential pools.
Following recommendations made by several coroners, among others, the Regulation now applies to all residential swimming pools, regardless of when they were installed. Exemptions that previously applied to certain pools installed before November 1, 2010, have been eliminated. The affected installations must therefore be brought into compliance with current requirements.
Because some installations may require significant modifications, particularly in the case of in-ground and semi-in-ground pools, affected owners have until September 30, 2027, to complete the required work.
The provincial Regulation primarily aims to control access to residential swimming pools, an essential component of drowning prevention. However, compliance with regulatory requirements alone does not eliminate all risks. A safe pool environment must always be combined with active and constant supervision, particularly for young children, as well as responsible behaviour around water.
