Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows eligible individuals who already hold a swim instruction certification to obtain the Lifesaving Society’s Swim Instructor certification without having to complete the entire course.
The process includes a Recognition of Prior Learning course followed by a Swim Instructor recertification.
Recognition of Prior Learning is available to individuals who have obtained one of the following swim instruction certifications within the past five years:
Canadian Red Cross: Water Safety Instructor (WSI);
YMCA: Swim Instructor.
A copy of the applicable certification card must be provided to confirm eligibility.
How to Obtain Recognition of Prior Learning
The process involves two steps.
Candidates must register for the Recognition of Prior Learning — Swim Instructor (RPL-SI) course.
This interactive course is offered online and consists of two 2-hour sessions, for a total of 4 hours.
Within three months of completing the RPL-SI course, candidates must participate in and successfully complete a Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor recertification.
Registration for the recertification is completed directly with the organization offering it.
A valid Bronze Cross or National Lifeguard certification is required to complete this step.
After Successfully Completing the Process
Once both steps have been successfully completed and the results have been added to the candidate’s record, the Lifesaving Society’s Swim Instructor certification is issued.
This certification allows instructors to teach the levels of the Swim for Life program, including Rookie, Ranger and Star Patrol, in accordance with the conditions associated with the certification.
