Instructor Trainer

First Aid

Instructor Trainers play an essential role in leadership development and maintaining the quality of Lifesaving Society programs. Their expertise allows them to train, mentor, and evaluate future instructors while helping develop the next generation of professionals in swimming, lifesaving, aquatic supervision, and first aid.

The course develops the skills needed to train instructors, supervise their learning, and assess their achievement of the competencies required by the Leadership program.

The Instructor Trainer course is a centralized training program offered by the Lifesaving Society. Affiliate members wishing to organize training for their staff can contact the Lifesaving Society team.

Duration
 20 hours

Prerequisites
  To enrol in the course, candidates must hold an instructor certification in the relevant discipline and demonstrate teaching experience that meets the Level 3 competencies of the Leadership program.

Depending on the certification held, the requirements are as follows:

Swim Instructor
  Have taught at least 60 hours of swimming courses.

Lifesaving Instructor
  Have taught a Bronze Medallion course;
  Have taught a Bronze Cross course;
  Have evaluated a Bronze Medallion course;
  Have evaluated a Bronze Cross course.

First Aid Instructor
  Have taught at least two first aid courses.

National Lifeguard Instructor
  Have taught a National Lifeguard course;
  Have evaluated a National Lifeguard course.

Candidates must also:
Provide a written recommendation from an affiliate member or an Instructor Trainer;
Be in good standing with the Lifesaving Society.

Certification Validity
  The Instructor Trainer certification is valid for 2 years.

To maintain a valid Instructor Trainer qualification:
The corresponding instructor certification must remain valid;
The maintenance and recertification requirements established by the credit system must be met.

Successfully completing the course is the first step in the certification process. Candidates must then successfully complete a teaching apprenticeship during an instructor course in the discipline for which they wish to obtain their Instructor Trainer qualification.

The apprenticeship provides an opportunity to apply the skills developed during the course and demonstrate the ability to plan, teach, mentor, and evaluate instructor candidates.

Once both the course and teaching apprenticeship have been successfully completed, the corresponding Instructor Trainer certification may be issued.

The materials required for the course can be ordered from the Lifesaving Society.

After successfully completing the course and the corresponding teaching apprenticeship, an Instructor Trainer may obtain qualifications to train instructors in one or more of the following disciplines:

  Swim Instructor;
  Lifesaving Instructor;
  National Lifeguard Instructor;
  First Aid Instructor.

Each Instructor Trainer qualification is linked to the corresponding instructor certification and the specific requirements of that specialization.
