Athlete Identification

Athlete Identification
Athlete identification is part of the Quebec Lifesaving Sport Development Program (QLSDP). It aims to recognize athletes who demonstrate development potential and provide them with support to help them progress toward high-performance sport.
Identification is not a reward for past performance. It is part of a long-term development approach based on factors such as the athlete’s potential, performance, progression and commitment.
There are two identification levels: Next Generation and Development.
The Next Generation level is intended for athletes who demonstrate potential that meets the established criteria and who are continuing their development toward the national level.
This identification is intended, in particular, to support progression toward potential selection to the Canadian Junior Team.
The Development level is intended for athletes whose performance and potential meet the criteria established for this level.
This identification is intended to support their progression toward high-performance sport and the Canadian Senior Team.
Depending on their identification level and available resources, identified athletes may have access to various support measures offered through the QLSDP, including:
Technical camps and development activities;
Support to foster athletic development;
Competition and development opportunities;
Various forms of financial support.
The support available may vary depending on the identification level, athlete needs and available resources.
Identification is based on a set of eligibility and performance criteria established as part of the QLSDP.
To be eligible, an athlete must meet all applicable mandatory criteria and at least one identification criterion.
The assessment may take into account:
Performance in competitions;
Athletic level and potential;
Athlete progression;
Participation in lifesaving sport activities and competitions;
Commitment to the development pathway;
Compliance with applicable policies, rules and requirements.
Meeting a criterion does not automatically guarantee identification. The athlete’s overall profile is taken into consideration.
Athletes participating in the QLSDP must fulfill the commitments associated with their status and the activities in which they participate.
Athletes identified at the Next Generation or Development level must comply with an agreement outlining the responsibilities, commitments and conditions associated with their identification.
This agreement is sent directly to the individuals concerned.
A separate agreement is provided to athletes selected to represent Team Quebec at an event.
It outlines the responsibilities and commitments associated with participating in the event and representing Quebec.
Athlete identification and selection are assessed by a selection committee composed of individuals responsible for athlete development and support.
Decisions are based primarily on the established criteria and athletic performance.
The committee may also consider factors related to development potential and the ability to contribute within a team environment, including:
A willingness to progress and develop skills;
Commitment to the athletic pathway;
A positive contribution to lifesaving sport;
The ability to collaborate and thrive in a team environment.
Key takeaway: Athlete identification is primarily intended to support athlete development and progression toward the highest levels of lifesaving sport. Criteria, procedures and support measures may evolve to reflect the objectives of the QLSDP. The program guide is the reference document for current requirements and procedures.
