Credit System
The credit system allows certain Leadership program certifications to be kept current by recognizing activities completed within the 24 months following certification or the most recent recertification.
It promotes continuing education, professional development, and active involvement in Lifesaving Society programs.
The credit system was updated in January 2026.
How to Earn Credits
Recognized activities are grouped into three categories:
Teaching;
Evaluation;
Professional development training.
The number of credits and categories required varies depending on the certification being maintained.
Requirements for Using the Credit System
To be eligible, the individual must:
Hold a current instructor certification corresponding to the certification being renewed: Swimming, Lifesaving, or First Aid;
Have taught at least one course or recertification corresponding to the certification being renewed;
Prepare a professional skills development plan for the next two years, identifying the skills to be developed or further strengthened.
For example, to renew a Lifesaving Instructor Trainer certification, the individual must have taught a Lifesaving Instructor course or a Lifesaving Instructor recertification.
Requirements by Certification
To keep this certification current, the individual must hold the following current certifications:
National Lifeguard;
Lifesaving Instructor;
First Aid Instructor.
Maintaining this certification requires earning 4 credits across all 3 categories of the credit system.
Maintaining this certification requires earning 6 credits across at least 2 categories of the credit system.
Certification Renewal
National Lifeguard Instructors and Instructor Trainers must complete the requirements for maintaining their certification within 24 months of their certification or most recent recertification.
There is no renewal fee. However, a $16 fee applies when a printed version of the certification card is requested.
