Tout baigne au soleil
People who work or participate in activities at an outdoor aquatic facility may be exposed to the sun for extended periods.
The Sun Safety at the Pool program provides aquatic facilities with tools to encourage good sun protection habits among both lifeguard teams and facility users.
Developed by the Lifesaving Society in collaboration with the Institut national de santé publique du Québec, with support from the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux, the program focuses on awareness, facility design, and practices that promote better protection from UV radiation.
Sun Protection in Aquatic Environments
At outdoor aquatic facilities, lifeguards may spend several hours a day outside. Facilities therefore have an important role to play in reducing sun exposure and encouraging safe behaviours.
Sun Safety at the Pool provides an approach that addresses two complementary areas:
Protecting aquatic staff, particularly through work organization and facility design;
Raising awareness, especially among young people, about behaviours that provide better protection from the sun.
The program also encourages managers to incorporate sun protection into their facility’s practices.
Tools for Aquatic Facility Managers
The Aquatic Facility Manager’s Guide supports facilities that want to implement or improve their sun protection practices.
It provides information and tools to help implement a sun protection policy and create an environment better suited to periods of heat and sun exposure.
Tools for Lifeguard Teams
The Lifeguard Guide helps lifeguard teams better understand the risks associated with sun exposure and contribute to public awareness.
It includes:
Information about sun protection and skin cancer;
Awareness activities for young people;
Tips for developing good sun protection habits;
A poster outlining the main sun protection guidelines.
