Nautical Rescuer
Water rescue encompasses the techniques and intervention methods used to assist people in distress in various natural environments, including swiftwater, calm water and ice-covered bodies of water.
These rescue operations present specific challenges related to currents, weather conditions, water temperature, ice and site accessibility. They require specialized skills to ensure the safety of both the people being rescued and the rescuers.
Depending on the type of operation and environment, water rescue may also require the use of watercraft, protective equipment and specialized rescue gear.
Training Adapted to Different Environments
The Lifesaving Society offers a variety of water rescue courses to prepare responders for the specific conditions and risks associated with each rescue environment. The techniques, equipment and strategies taught vary according to the aquatic environment and the circumstances in which rescue operations are carried out.
Emergency Water Rescue Responder
This course is primarily intended for firefighters involved in water rescue operations. Participants, who always work as part of a team, learn to assess situations and solve problems to make sound decisions in, on and around water.
The course complies with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards 1006 and 1670, which establish requirements for technical rescue operations.
Water Rescue
This category includes four courses: Waterfront Safety Officer and Boat Rescue Operations, both intended for workers and compliant with the Safety Code for the Construction Industry; Boat Rescue Operations, designed for individuals participating in water-based activities; and Water Rescue for First Responders, intended specifically for first responders.
Swiftwater Rescue
The swiftwater rescue courses have been updated by the Consortium de sécurité en rivière du Québec (CSRQ), which brings together the three organizations involved in river safety in Quebec: Eau Vive Québec, Canot Kayak Québec and the Lifesaving Society. These courses are now referred to as River Rescue.
They are designed for individuals who participate in river sports, such as canoeing and kayaking, as well as those who supervise these activities.
Ice Rescue
Ice rescue is a complex operation that can be dangerous. The Lifesaving Society’s training helps ensure the safety of both victims and rescuers.
Ice/Cold Water or Swiftwater Rescue
This course is designed for professionals working as part of water rescue teams, such as firefighters specializing in water rescue operations. It aims to ensure the safety of both victims and rescuers.
The course complies with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 1006.
